REVIEWS.
(The Z Gun / z-gun.org).
Gang Wizard deals with traditional rock instrument-generated noise. The tracks here balance between compositions and songs. At their best, Gang Wizard finds a riff inside the chaos and work it. The riff usual comes in the form of a throb or a squeal, though on Cattle Car Tippage it manifests itself in a meditative chant. The moments when the band really locks in are the best. Emerged in the riff they become like starved animals feasting on fresh road kill. That verve comes about on three out of four of Atlas’s songs and in about 50% of those songs. Good thing, because it makes listening to the process of discovery pay off. One composition (The Sky Elephant) is a formless generation of notes and noise which was probably a lot of fun to make but could have been any band anywhere at any moment in the last 30 years of underground music. – Scott Soriano
